"Long haulers" are struggling with long term COVID-19 effects!

As the marathon pandemic unfolds, it is clear that COVID-19 is not done after initial insult to the host. Countless long haulers who are in long battle with COVID-19 have reported varied health effects after initial episode of the illness.





Beyond lungs and respiratory system, COVID-19 has adverse impact on several body systems including heart, kidneys, nervous system, mental health, skin, joints, muscles etc.


As per CDC and other organizations, following are the common long term symptoms and complications experienced by COVID-19 survivors:

  • Feeling tired

  • Cough

  • Difficulty Breathing

  • Scarring of lungs

  • Chest pain

  • Palpitations

  • Inflammation of heart muscle

  • Kidney injury

  • Headache

  • Muscle aches

  • Joint aches

  • Brain fog

  • Depression, Anxiety and Mood changes

  • Rash and hair loss

  • Neurological symptoms like lack of taste/smell, sleep disorder, memory issues

Treatments that may help some of these symptoms:

  • Niacin and folic acid may help muscle aches and fatigue

  • Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Zinc may help with boosting the immune system

  • Quercetin may help by reducing inflammation and other beneficial effects

  • Melatonin may help sleep disturbance

  • Allergy medications like cetirizine, fluticasone spray and cough medications may help cough and congestion

  • Inhalers like albuterol may help chest tightness and improve breathing

  • Gabapentin or Pregabalin may help if cough is not responding to standard treatment

  • Antidepressants such as SSRIs and others may help fatigue and mood changes

  • Cold water immersion (hydrotherapy) may speed up fatigue recovery

  • Meditation and Mindfulness may help mental health, fatigue and sleep

  • Activities like sudoku, crossword, puzzles, chess may help memory function
