AI tools like chatbots offered by Google, Open AI, Perplexity etc. can be amazing helpers, but using them all the time for every question may quietly change how you think and learn independently. Just like our ability to do mental math changes if we use calculator for every calculation. Scientists funded by organizations like the NIH are beginning to map out both the upsides and the risks of heavy AI use for our brains.

The upside: a powerful thinking aid
Used well, Large Language Models (LLMs) can act like a smart study buddy. They can explain hard ideas in simple language, organize messy information, and help us see patterns we might miss on our own. This can lighten our mental load during complex tasks, letting us focus more on judgment and creativity instead of just hunting for facts.
For students and professionals, this “cognitive support” can mean quicker understanding, fewer basic mistakes, and more time spent on higher‑level work—like designing, planning, or making decisions—rather than just gathering information.
The downside: what happens when we lean on it too much
Trouble starts when the model stops being a helper and becomes a crutch. If we let AI write, summarize, and decide for us most of the time, we practice key mental skills much less: remembering details, reading deeply, building arguments, and checking our own thinking. Over long periods, that can dull those skills, much like not exercising a muscle.
There is also the risk of “shallow thinking.” When an LLM hands us quick, polished answers, it is tempting to skim and accept them instead of wrestling with ideas ourselves. That can hurt real understanding and long‑term memory. To make matters trickier, these systems can sound confident even when they are wrong, which encourages us to trust them too much and reinforces our own biases.
Healthy use: partner, not pilot
The safest and most brain‑friendly way to use LLMs is to treat them as partners, not pilots. A few practical principles:
Do your own thinking first: try to solve, outline, or explain something before asking AI to help.
Use AI for support, not substitution: to brainstorm, clarify, or check your work—not to replace it.
Stay critical and curious: question the output, compare it with trusted sources, and ask “why” instead of just copying and pasting.
This balanced style of use lets us enjoy the benefits of powerful AI tools while still keeping our core cognitive skills—attention, memory, reasoning, and judgment—active and strong.
